Kirana vs Quick Commerce: 7 Ways Small Retailers Can Win Customers Back

Ten-minute delivery apps have changed how India buys groceries. A Datum Intelligence survey of 3,000 adults across 10 cities, conducted in October 2024, found that 46% of respondents had reduced their spending at kirana shops, and over 82% had moved at least a quarter of their grocery spending to quick commerce platforms. The same report projected the quick commerce market to grow from USD 6.1 billion in 2024 to USD 40 billion by 2030.

That sounds scary. But the neighbourhood shop still has advantages no app can copy: trust, credit, local knowledge and a face customers know. The shops that are growing are the ones that combine those strengths with simple technology. Here is how.

1. Take orders on WhatsApp and deliver nearby

Your regular customers already have your number. Let them send a list on WhatsApp, pack it, and deliver within your area. Many shops offer free delivery above a small order value within one or two kilometres. You do not need ten minutes. You need to be reliable.

2. Turn khata into your superpower

Apps do not give udhaar to a family they have known for years. You do. The problem is tracking it. Keep every credit entry digital, share a clear statement, and send polite WhatsApp reminders so credit builds loyalty instead of losses.

3. Bill faster than the app checkout

Long queues push customers to their phones. Barcode scanning, voice billing and saved customer details cut billing time to seconds, especially in evening rush hours.

4. Put your shop online

A simple online store with your categories, bestsellers and delivery rules lets customers browse your shelf from home. List your shop on Google so people searching nearby can find you, call you or get directions.

5. Stock what your street actually buys

Quick commerce apps use data to decide what to stock. You can too. Look at your bestsellers, slow movers and items that run out every week. Reorder the right items before they run out, and stop tying up money in stock that does not move.

6. Bring back customers who stopped coming

Your sales records show who used to buy every week and has gone quiet. A friendly message with a festive offer or a new arrival is often enough to bring them back.

7. Keep what apps cannot copy

Fresh produce, loose items, personal recommendations, easy returns and a known face are reasons people still walk into a kirana. Protect them. Technology should save you time so you can spend more of it with customers.

The bottom line

Quick commerce wins on speed and discounts. Kiranas win on trust, credit and relationships. The shops that will thrive are the ones that run like a modern business while staying a neighbourhood shop.

Frequently asked questions

Is quick commerce replacing kirana stores?

It is taking a share of grocery spending, especially in big cities, but kiranas remain central to Indian retail. Shops that add delivery, digital billing and online ordering are better placed to compete.

Do I need expensive software to compete?

No. A single billing and inventory app on your phone can handle billing, khata, stock and an online store.
