Festive and Wedding Season Stock Planning: A Cash-Flow Checklist for Small Retailers

For most Indian shops, the stretch from Diwali through the wedding season is the busiest time of the year. Done well, it can make your year. Done badly, it leaves you with a store room full of unsold stock and no cash for January. This checklist helps you stock smart, protect your cash and sell through.

1. Start with the cash you really have

Before you place a single order, set aside money for rent, electricity, salaries, existing supplier dues, transport and emergencies. What is left is your real stock budget. Never spend all of it on inventory.

2. Learn from last season

Look at what you sold in the same weeks last year. Which items sold steadily? Which ran out early? Which needed heavy discounts in the end? Your own sales history is the best forecast you have.

3. Split stock into four buckets

  • Essentials: items that sell every day, all year.
  • Proven seasonal: festive and wedding items that sold well before.
  • Experimental: a small quantity of new items to test demand.
  • Backup: extra quantity of your top sellers, ordered only once early sales confirm demand.

Give most of your budget to the first two buckets.

4. Stagger your orders

Instead of one big order, buy in two or three rounds. You keep cash in hand, reduce leftover stock and can react to what is actually selling.

5. Plan supplier payments

Write down every due date, advance, credit period, minimum order and return policy. Negotiate credit days on bulk orders and ask which items can be returned or exchanged if they do not sell.

6. Watch expiry and slow movers

Sweets, dry fruits, cosmetics and packaged foods have shelf lives. Track batches and expiry dates, and move slow items to the front or into combo offers before they become a loss.

7. Control festive udhaar

Credit sales jump in peak season. Record every entry, set a clear due date and follow up politely before the season ends, so your working capital comes back in time for the next orders.

8. Review every week

Check sales, stock and dues every week during the season. Reorder what is flying, stop ordering what is not, and keep an eye on cash in the bank.
